Art Show featuring works by Robby Johnston
Join us at Downtown Yoga for a special Trolley Night in downtown Memphis. We’ll be transforming the space into an art gallery, hosting works by mid-south artist Robby Johnston.
“Searching for Sunday”
“The Southern Delta is a land rich with alluvium soil, created by flooding rivers that have risen and fallen throughout millennia. Where once huge old-growth forest dominated the landscape, you’ll now find massive fields where toil n’ faith strive to turn seed into harvest.
When I get to spend time in the Delta, I’m always fascinated by the one-room primitive churches that are scattered across this treeless land like pellets from a shotgun blast. These wood-planked-wall rooms found way, way down a muddy road in the middle of nowhere seem to house some of the most faithful people. And, they don’t ask for too much: just love, family, health, freedom and a sense of accomplishment at the end of the workday.
It’s a place where homemade wooden tombstones give the Devil’s Ham a place to roam while the faithful gather weekly in a small room, giving thanks for what little they have. A land exploited by the rich and home to a crossroads where one can sell their own soul for worldly treasures or choose to have faith. A simple land where good and evil sort it out in the still muddy waters under the full moonlight.
Often when I drive through this land, it’s after a big night of carousing and dancing in Clarksdale’s juke joints. I’ll force myself to get up early and take the backroads along the river up to Memphis. As I wander aimlessly thru this magic land, I sometimes feel like I’m Searching for Sunday.”
Note: Robby Johnston is a self-taught artist from Memphis that has been residing in New Orleans for the last two years. He still owns a home in Memphis and visits as often as possible. Come see him and his most recent art this October 25th!
