As Thanksgiving approaches, gratitude is at the top of our minds. More than ever, at Downtown Yoga we are grateful for our growing community, for our wonderful instructors, and for the joy that comes from our regular yoga practice. That's why our next reason to love yoga is that it makes us thankful!
We love this testimonial from a yogi cultivating gratitude in her practice: "Great gratitude comes ultimately from a place of great humility. Replacing expectation with awe, we see the world through childlike eyes. Everything is a gift, everything is alive, everything is thrilling. We let the quality of life fill us up instead of the quantity."
Each time we come to the mat, we are humbled. We come ready to learn and improve through instruction and practice. We open ourselves, mentally through meditation and physically in our postures. We release what we are holding onto and make space to notice the simple sounds, thoughts, and feelings we might otherwise overlook. We find joy and fullness by letting go. And through this practice of humility comes great gratitude - for our instructors who guide us, for our bodies that sustain us, and for the myriad gifts and blessing all around.
As we head deeper into the holiday season, and are surrounded by abundant food, gifts, and ornamentation, remember to let the quality of life fill you up rather than the quantity. And the next time your instructor asks you to set an intention for your practice, choose gratitude!
